Francisco Oropeza Biography
Five people, including a child, were killed during a shooting at a southeast Texas home Friday night, authorities said.
Authorities responded to the shooting around 11:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Walters Road in the Trails End area of Cleveland, about 45 miles north of Houston.
The San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office told Eyewitness News the call was about stalking at a home near Walters Road and Seth Boulevard.
Investigation
When the agents arrived, they said they found several people shot. Investigators said all the victims are from Honduras.
Investigators said they believe the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza, was intoxicated and began firing an AR-15 outside on his front porch. It was then that the neighbors asked Oropeza to be quiet because they had a baby that was trying to sleep, according to the deputies.
Suspect
The suspect responded by telling them it was his property, according to Sheriff Greg Capers, and that a person at the home obtained video of the suspect walking to the front door with the rifle.
The sheriff told Eyewitness News that five victims, including an 8-year-old boy, were shot from the neck up, “almost execution style.”
Capers said there were 10 people in the house and no one else was hurt. He said two of the victims, believed to be from Honduras, were found lying on top of two children inside.
“When we got here, the two women in the bedroom were lying on top of two of the three youngest (surviving) children,” Capers said.
One of the victims was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Three other people went to the hospital covered in blood, but authorities said they suffered no physical injuries.
Victim
Three of the victims were women and one was a man. Their names were not revealed. Capers said the victims were between the ages of 8 and 40.
Capers said some of those at the house had just moved from Houston earlier in the week, but he didn’t know if they planned to stay there.
Cleveland ISD issued a statement, saying the district is “aware of the situation that has occurred in the Trail’s End community. We will offer crisis counseling as needed.”
The district did not say if any of the victims attended schools there.
