Who is Payton Gendron ?

An alleged white supremacist accused of shooting 10 people dead and wounding three others in a live-streamed massacre at a Buffalo, New York supermarket on Saturday has pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder.

Payton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, New York, who was barefoot, masked and dressed in a paper gown, told the judge he understood the charge against him and was not guilty at arraignment Saturday for the night.

Neighbors told DailyMail.com that the Gendrons are an unassuming family and that the news of the Payton murders had shocked them to the core.

Hours earlier, Gendron was caught by police leaving the Tops Friendly supermarket at 1275 Jefferson Avenue around 2:30 p.m. m., after shooting 13 people, 10 of them fatally.

Police said 11 of those shot were black and the other two were white, and suggested that Gendron had walked through the supermarket looking for specific people to attack, although he did not say whether this was based on the color of his skin.

Aaron Salter Jr Victim

Aaron Salter Jr, a former Buffalo police officer, is the first victim named in the attack. The father of three is being hailed as a hero after exchanging fire with Gendron inside the market.

Murder

“A shooter, he’s a type of mass shooter,” says one of the bystanders as police and emergency services detain the man in military uniform.

‘Damn, look at him, a young boy,’ adds the viewer as he comments on one of the bodies.

The police then instruct bystanders to back off as they take control of the situation.

Hours after the shooting, Erica Pugh-Mathews waited outside the police tape wondering what had happened to family members inside the store.

‘We would like to know the status of my aunt, my mother’s sister. She was there with her fiancé, they broke up and went to different hallways,” she said. A bullet barely hit its target. She was able to hide in a freezer but she couldn’t get to my aunt and she doesn’t know where she is. We’d just like to know if she’s okay.

Gendron shot four people outside the store, three fatally, the commissioner said. He then went into the supermarket where he exchanged gunfire with Salter. The former police officer shot him several times, but the bullets hit the shooter’s arm and left him unfazed, the commissioner said.

Gendron then killed Salter.

Six other victims are believed to have been shot to death inside.

Salter’s son, Aaron Salter Jr., praised his father for trying to stop the maniacal gunman.

“Today is a shock,” he told the Daily Beast. I’m pretty sure he saved some lives today. He is a hero.

The murders were broadcast live on streaming site Twitch, although the clip was removed two minutes after it was posted.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has criticized Gendron’s “insane” killings and called for a crackdown on social media companies, which she says have effectively acted as “accomplices” in allowing mass shooters like Gendron to glorify their crimes. .

President Joe Biden is closely following the evolution of the tragedy, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Will G., a frozen dairy worker at the supermarket, said he was coming out of the cooler to store milk when the shooting happened.

‘I just heard gunshots. Shots and shots and shots,” he told the Buffalo News. “It sounded like things were falling down.”

He added that he hid in the cooler and that more people joined him to protect themselves from the shots.

‘I hid. I just hid,” he said. He wasn’t going to leave that room.

Police officials and a spokesman for the supermarket chain did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The surrounding area is mostly residential, with a Family Dollar store and a fire station near the store.

Police closed off the block, lined with onlookers, and yellow police tape encircled the entire parking lot. Mayor Byron Brown was at the scene Saturday afternoon and expected to address the media.

The shooting comes just over a year after a March 2021 attack at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, that killed 10 people.

Investigators have not released any information on why they believe the man accused of that attack targeted the supermarket.
