Who was Simon Bolton ?
Teesside radio host Simon Bolton died on Christmas Eve after being admitted to a hospital with coronavirus.
The 54-year-old announcer had worked at Zetland FM since its launch in 2015.
Simon’s wife Joanne said her husband, who is the father of 16-year-old Leyla, was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough on Wednesday after testing positive for COVID-19, Teeside Live reports. .
The 43-year-old legal secretary said he passed away suddenly on Friday and they are currently not sure how he died.

Joanne, who has been married to Simon since 2004, said: “He was well known to people. He had a good drink, he could speak for England!”

“Being a radio host was what he wanted to do. Radio Revivals was his passion. It was what was never played and that was what he preferred.”
After suffering health problems, including a leg amputation, much-loved broadcaster Simon produced his radio show from his home in Redcar.
The news brings more sadness to Zetland FM, after radio host Julie Donaldson died after contracting coronavirus last October.
On Boxing Day, Zetland FM broadcast a tribute to his ‘colleague and friend’.
They posted on social media: “It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that our colleague and friend from Zetland FM, Simon Bolton, has passed away.
“Simon passed away on Christmas Eve after a short illness.
“Simon has been a part of Zetland FM since our launch in 2015 and hosted many shows on the air, including our Monday sports show, weekend breakfast and Friday’s rock show.”
Statement
Zetland FM said in a statement on Boxing Day: “It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that our colleague and friend from Zetland FM, Simon Bolton, has passed away.
“Simon passed away on Christmas Eve after a short illness.
“Simon has been a part of Zetland FM since our launch in 2015 and featured many shows on the air, including our Monday sports show, weekend breakfast, and Friday rock show.
“More recently, Simon’s regular show ‘Radio Revivals’ on Zetland FM showcased his great passion for music of all genres and eras, as well as his immense knowledge of bands and artists.”
He continued: “His favorite band was the Beatles, and whenever he was on the air he always tried to squeeze a track from them on his show.”
Born and raised in Redcar, Simon attended the School of the Sacred Heart from 1979 to 1984 and in 2017 he was involved in organizing an alumni reunion.
“He was also a lifelong fan of Middlesbrough Football Club, and many people will know him from his longstanding involvement with the Boro Supporters Club.

“Simon was also a huge fan of cinema, particularly the ‘Star Wars’ movies, as well as enjoying many other movies as a regular at Redcar’s Regent Cinema.
“In recent years, Simon’s life had been dominated by health problems, and he worked hard to record his weekly show for Zetland FM at his home in Redcar.
“Simon will be greatly missed by all of Zetland FM’s colleagues, friends and listeners and we send our deepest condolences to his wife Joanne, his daughter Leyla, his family and friends of his.”

Julie Donaldson, 50, who hosted the Morning Mix show, spent several weeks in intensive care with the virus before her death in October 2020.
